Review and Giveaway–Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus Portable Hard Drive

The first computer I ever bought was an IBM 386 PC. It was slightly used, but I still paid a pretty penny for it. I was willing to pay the extra cost because of the amazing amount of storage on the hard drive—30 megabytes. I couldn’t imagine how I could ever need more space than that.

Oh how times have changed. Today in the mail I received a Toshiba Portable Hard Drive to review. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the amount of data it can carry—1 terabyte. I had to look it up, but a terabyte is equal to 1,024 gigabytes, or 1,048,576 megabytes. In other words, it has approximately 3,500 times the amount of space than my original 386. And it’s only slightly bigger than my iPhone with its case.

Still struggling to grasp the amount of storage on my new Toshiba Portable Hard Drive, I calculated how many DVDs, mp3s, or digital images I could actually store. Using typical-sized files, it turns out I could store over 250 full-length DVDs, which is equivalent to every Thomas the Tank Engine DVD ever made with room to spare. Or if I decided to store music, the device can hold over 263,000 songs (almost enough for my teenage niece). And if I choose to store digital pictures, there’s room for over 285,000 of them—the exact number of pictures my wife takes on every vacation. Of course I can mix and match all of those types as well.
